James Reid

James travels with his wife Patty in both the Book of Negroes and the Birchtown Muster. A James REED- (almost certainly this James Reid) is listed as being with Dunmore's Royal Ethiopian Regiment . By the time of the Book of Negroes he is listed as being with the Royal Artillery Department and it is this unit that he is listed with here. Possibly through this service, James is made a company Captain in Birchtown. The couple have no children and are not listed in the tithables for Dr Reade in Norfolk. In the Norfolk tithables for 1774 (Church st) John Read lists Harry, Charles and Parker. It could be that James is one of these three. John Reade was Simon Halstread's son in law. He was also a landowner in Princess Ann County.
