John Boden [Bowdoin]

John Bowdoin was President for the Committee of Safety in Northampton County, VA in 1774. He died in 1775. His sons were John Jr and Peter. He was a merchant and shipowner in business with Matthew Phripp in Phripp Bowdoin and Co. Bowdoin slaves run away in 1775-6 and again in 1777. Isaac Smith served as the executor of John Bowdoin’s estate. John Jr was married to Susan Custis.

1783

Evacuation of New York

  • Evacuation of New York -

    In April 1783 the first evacuation fleet left for Nova Scotia. A week later  the British Commander, Sir Guy Carleton, sailed up the Hudson River to Orangetown for a conference with General Washington to discuss the evacuation. As the victorious commander, Washington opened the meeting by reiterating the resolution of Congress regarding “the delivery of all Negroes and other property.”
